How to make your next work function more sustainable

As we become more aware of the impact we have on the environment, it is important to take steps to reduce our carbon footprint in every aspect of our lives. One area where we can make a difference is at the office, and how we plan and execute work functions. We put together some simple tips to help make your next staff event more sustainable.

Choose a sustainable venue

If you’re choosing a venue for your work function, consider the environmental impact of the location. Look for venues that have implemented sustainable practices, such as using renewable energy sources (wink Ecotricity wink) or reducing waste. You can also look for venues that are easily accessible by public transportation or within walking distance, reducing the carbon emissions from transportation.

Use sustainable catering options

Food and beverage choices can have a significant impact on the environment. Choose catering options that use locally-sourced, organic, and seasonal produce. Avoid single-use plastics and opt for reusable or biodegradable plates, cups, and utensils. Provide vegetarian and vegan options to reduce the carbon footprint of the event.

Reduce paper waste

Avoid printing unnecessary materials such as flyers, brochures, or programs. Use digital alternatives such as email or social media to communicate with attendees. If printed materials are necessary, use recycled paper and print on both sides.

Reduce energy usage

Encourage attendees to turn off lights and electronic devices when not in use. Use energy-efficient lighting and temperature control systems. Consider using natural light instead of artificial lighting during the day. Unless of course your electricity is provided by Ecotricity, then you can enjoy a lit event using 100% renewable, Toitū climate positive certified energy.

Promote sustainable transportation

Encourage attendees to carpool, use public transportation, or bike to the event. Offer incentives such as free parking or discounts for those who use sustainable transportation methods. Provide bike racks and public transportation information to make it easy for attendees to choose sustainable options.

Incorporate sustainability into the event program

Include sustainability themes and messaging throughout the event program. For example, invite a sustainability expert to speak or include a sustainability panel discussion. Encourage attendees to share their own sustainable practices and ideas.

By implementing even one of these tips will reduce the environmental impact of your next work function. Remember, small changes can make a big difference. Let's all do our part to protect the planet.
